Carl Junction’s Teacher of the Year is now also one of Southwest Missouri’s top educators. Rachel Hensley was named the Carl Junction District Teacher of the Year in April. This month she was also named as one of two Regional Teachers of the Year.  She will go on to apply for the Missouri Teacher of the Year honor.

Hensley teaches 6th-8th-grade students in the Carl Junction Gifted Education program and serves as a coach for the academic bowl team and coordinator for the Destination Imagination team, a creative-thinking competition.

“Gifted students and their unique issues are often misunderstood,” said Hensley. “Very often, my students do not exhibit what some people call “gifted” behavior. One of my jobs is to understand my students, to help them understand themselves, and then to ultimately help them be successful.”

Thirty-four teachers across the state have received regional honors. Finalists for Missouri Teacher of the Year will be selected in September, and the State Teacher of the Year will be announced on October 19 in Jefferson City.

The Missouri State Teacher of the Year program is designed to focus public attention on excellence in teaching and honor classroom teachers throughout Missouri.
