Sewell named Golden Lion

Carl Junction’s Autumn Sewel awarded the Golden Lion

Autumn Sewell, a senior at Carl Junction High School, received the regional Golden Lion Award.

The Golden Lion program selects a local senior nominated online by faculty or community members. Recipients must demonstrate a desire to impact their community while also influencing their school positively.

Autumn has been a busy volunteer for the community. Her projects include mentoring younger students through a classroom connection program and Team Bulldog and working on a mural at the Primary 2-3 Building. She has also been involved with the Shop with a Cop program, helped raise funds for breast cancer patients, volunteered with Watered Gardens in their ministry to the homeless.

The tragic news about the Joplin Police Department has hit Autumn especially hard since she is from a law enforcement family. “I wanted to do something to help these families,” said Autumn. “I realized that I can make a difference, and I started exploring ideas to raise money for the officers’ families.”

Autumn has led the effort with the help of other Future Business Leaders of America members to sell Back the Blue bracelets. They are also hosting an online auction on March 26 & 27 with items donated for the Back the Blue Auction. Funds raised will go directly to the Joplin Police officers' families.

CJHS Business Teacher Rhonda Wimmer says “When I think of Autumn, I think of service. She has a true servant’s heart.”

Autumn plans to attend Missouri Southern, pursuing a career in Healthcare Administration.

The Golden Lion Award Scholarship program is sponsored by MSSU, H.E. Williams, Inc, and Nexstar Broadcasting. If you would like to nominate a senior, please visit their website
