Attendance:

Dr. David Pyle, Assistant Superintendent for Operations
Lindsey Stevenson, Nutrition and Wellness Director, District Wellness Coordinator
Christy Pittman, Staff Wellness Coordinator
Brendan Gubera, Athletic Training Teacher and Coach
Overview:
Lindsey Stevenson opened with an overview of the wellness program and goals.
Nutrition:
Goal for 24-25 to increase or maintain last year’s lunch participation goal of 6% and breakfast
participation by 3%. In the 23-24 school year breakfast decreased by 10% and lunch by 2%.
A new morning cook was hired this year at the High School, with more options being served.
Craig Hayes mentioned the time restraint in the mornings is a deterrent for students, and that some kids just don’t eat breakfast. Craig also mentioned this year has been better with the variety of options for lunch.
Cafeteria procedures were also implemented in grades 2-6 for some cold self-serve items.
Lindsey worked with the high school nutrition and wellness teacher, Mrs. Mello to have students work in groups to make menus for the student body to vote on and be featured on the menu as a student favorite the following semester.
Taste testing at parent/teacher conference will continue.
Lindsey proposed a new goal to continue receiving grant funding for local foods.
Proposed new goal:
1.
Increase the procurement of fresh local goods including meat, fruits and vegetables. 100% of our ground beef will be procured from local sources by the end of the 25-26 school year. We will work with MOBeef, Grow with MO, MU Extension, and our local FFA chapter to find local partners.
2.
Establish relationships with local farmers through the Webb City Farmer’s Market and the Carl Junction Ag Department/FFA chapter to begin forecasting our produce needs
for future school years. 10% of our fresh fruits and vegetables will be procured from
local farmers by the end of the 25-26 school year.
3.
Conduct nutrition education and taste testing in grades K-6 to increase fruit and vegetable consumption.
4.
Establish green houses at the school farm by the end of the 25-26 school year so we can begin growing our own fruits and vegetables in the 26-27 school year.
Physical Education/Activity:
Brendan Gubera spoke about having standard goals set.
Target goals were met very well across the board.
Student base line numbers have increased. Setting up sub folder to make improvements if not meeting goals.
Will continue to monitor and track fitnessgram data at each grade level. We will meet to set goals each year during the first quarter. Goals will be based upon not only how kids
performed on a pre assessment, but also on how they performed the prior year.
There will be baseline and summative assessments.
There will be a secondary goal for each student to show individual growth even if they do
not meet the standard.
The committee discussed the benefit of the PE program. Adding Lifetime Sports class for
students who aren’t involved in athletics.
Will continue to cooperate with the school Health Liaison to promote wellness and to work
on incentives to students who show improvement.
Other School Based Activities:
Vaping target goal continues to be not to see an increase in vaping or not more than 5%.
Vape detectors are still in use and discussion was had again on effectiveness of the
detectors.
Will continue PSA information at Junior High and High School regarding the dangers of
vaping.
Craig Hayes mentioned that it might be more impactful to have speakers that have suffered
from vaping to come speak directly to students instead of just a class about it. Hayes also
commented that he thinks home environment matters a great deal.
Open Discussion Items:
Possibility of physical activity clubs/intramurals to increase opportunities for physical activity.
Airforce ROTC has been added to the High school as an option for students and physical activity/health is part of their curriculum.
Continue to work with Community/Family in all areas of the wellness program
