Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) Plan
Carl Junction R-1 School District
June 1, 2020
The Carl Junction R-1 School District will communicate the purpose and expectations of the AMI to students and parents through student handbooks, the district website, email, and parent/student meetings. This communication will occur early in the school year and at least quarterly throughout the remainder of the school year.
The AMI Plan is established for use during extended school closures so that students have the opportunity of continuous enrichment and learning during a time when students are not able to attend school due to extended weather and/or health-related incidents. When it is necessary to implement the AMI Plan, students and parents will be notified through social media, email, and district phone calls home.
During AMI implementation, students will receive instruction and enrichment materials over the Priority Standards for each content area that would have been taught during the extended closure. Students will be given independent practice and application of previously taught concepts, enrichment, and new instructional content. The instructional plan for AMI days for students with disabilities will be documented in each individual student’s IEP.
Students will be provided materials and assignments through electronic/web-based instruction, Canvas, textbooks, library/classroom library books, manipulatives, learning games, teacher-created materials and packets/worksheets. Completion of lessons and activities will be turned in on the next date of attendance or submitted online or mailed/brought to the school for dropoff.
Available logs of AMI participation through technology will be reviewed consistently. Teachers will communicate with students weekly to monitor AMI use by students. Teachers will communicate through email, phone call, text, and messaging through the Canvas learning management system and other messaging apps. Teachers will follow Policy GBH when communicating with students.
AMI will be provided through both technology and/or by paper. In order to determine families without internet access, the district will survey families. At the beginning of each school year and for all new enrollees throughout the school year, the district will have a form for each family to sign, indicating they do or do not have internet access and, in the event of an extended school closure, asking whether they need a paper packet or can access the online materials. This form will be posted online as well as handed out to families. For families for whom we don’t receive the information back, we will ask teachers to make contact, send the document home with students, and/or mail the paper forms home. We will continue to use all avenues to find out the information until we have 100% response rate.
Students in Grades 5-12 are issued Chromebooks for use and students in Grades K-4 may checkout Chrombooks and/or iPads for use during the extended closure. Students without internet access at home will receive paper packets of instructional materials. All paper packets will cover the same standards as those being covered in the online platform but activities may differ. Activities will be equitable for both paper packets and online work. Paper packets will either be mailed home to families or there will be specific times for paper packet pickups/drop-offs at the school.
