• ELEMENTS OF LITERACY

    Placement in this freshman reading course is based on student scoring on state assessment, district assessments, and teacher collaboration.  The course is designed to improve reading, writing, and critical thinking skills for freshmen students.  The focus is on developing a strong foundation in decoding strategies and active reading and writing strategies.  Specific strategies in structural analysis, comprehension, vocabulary and fluency will be taught directly and explicitly.  The materials used will emphasize a systematic approach to teaching and learning of reading and writing strategies.  The use of online technology will be employed for diagnostic and instructional purposes.  NCAA will not accept this class for certification.  It is important to get specific information from the NCAA website.  (one credit, one-year course for grade 9)
